Archery Opens 2011 Season With Strong Performance at the Eastern Seaboard FITA

MAYS LANDING, N.J. - The 2011 archery season got underway at the Eastern Seaboard FITA on Sunday, January 17. The tournament was hosted by the Atlantic Cape Community College. Senior Gillian Kemmerer had top honors for the Lions in the Female Collegiate Compound Division, while Sarah Chai reclaimed top honors for the second straight year in the Recurve Division.
"This was a great start to the season," said head coach Derek Davis. "I'm happy with the results and looking forward to the rest of the season."
Kemmerer, who shot recurve last year, had an impressive season debut. The senior fired a 523, edging her teammate Emily Genatowski who shot a 495. Rounding out the top-three for Columbia was first-year Mary Quien who shot a 392 in her first collegiate competition.
In women's recurve, Chai once again finished on top with a team-high score of 552, after placing first at the tournament last year with a total of 544. Also breaking the 500-plateau was Maya Inamura and Sara Lavenhar. Inamura fired a 511 while Lavenhar shot a 507, finishing second and third, respectively.
Also competing for Columbia in the recurve division were Marilyn He (368), Donju Min (351), Aaquilah Chambers (355).
Columbia will return to action on Saturday, February 5 when it competes at the Pennsylvania State Championships in Reading, Pa.
