BRONX, N.Y. - The Columbia men finished fourth and turned in the top finish out of the Ivy League schools while the women finished seventh overall today, on a brisk Van Cortlandt Park course at the 2014 NCAA Northeast Cross Country Regional.
WOMEN
The women began the day with a 6K race that proved to be the right distance. Among the 40 teams competing in the regional, the women took seventh overall. Iona claimed the top spot and the top two runners on the day, followed by Providence in second, and Dartmouth in third. The Lions finished one spot ahead of four schools from the Ancient Eight, as Brown claimed eighth, Cornell finished ninth, Yale took 10th, and Harvard came in 11th.
It was a total team effort for the women, as a mere 16 seconds separated the first Columbia finisher from the fifth. The two All-Ivy league runners for Columbia took the top two Lion finishes, as Olivia Sadler was the first Lion runner through at 21:12.67 for 32nd place, followed by Leila Mantilla in 37th at 21:18.31. The third Lion across was Samantha Siler, who finished in 21:21.09 for 40th.
Natalie Tanner and Aryn Foland rounded out the top five for the Lions, finishing in 47th and 49th, respectfully. In total, 275 runners competed in the women's division.
MEN
The Columbia men proved to be much better than the sixth place showing at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, coming in first among the conference competition, and fourth overall. Among the 39 school competing, the Lions finished ahead of fifth place Cornell, sixth place Harvard, seventh place Yale, eighth place Brown, and ninth place Dartmouth. Syracuse was the team champion, followed by Providence in second, and Iona in third.
It was another close finish for the men, as only 45 seconds separated the first Lion runner from the fifth. Jack Boyle was the first runner across the finish like for Columbia, taking 13th place overall in the 10K in 30:39.91. Not far behind Boyle was Daniel Everett, who clocked a 30:44.13 for 16th place.
Tait Rutherford, who was an All-Ivy League runner last time out, finished in 30:57.98 for 21st place. Casey Adams was next in 30th place at 31:12.34, followed by Ben Eversole in 46th at 31:25.77. In total, 262 runners made up the men's division.
After finishing in the top 25, Boyle, Everett, and Rutherford earned a spot on the USATFCCCA All-Region team, announced today.
Next weekend, both Columbia teams will compete in the IC4A/ECAC Championships, which will also be held at Van Cortlandt Park.
