PROVIDENCE- R.I. – On the second day of action, the Columbia women's swimming and diving team returned the 2014 Ivy League Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center for a five event preliminary session and an eight event finals session.

Mikaila Gaffey captured her first Ivy League title on the night with a career day in the 100 breast. Gaffey clocked in with a personal-best time of 1:01.45 in the prelims, 0.3 seconds faster than the runner-up, and headed into the finals as one of the favorites to take home the crown. The junior finished strong in the championship finals to set another personal-best time of 1:01.05 to grab first-place and set a Brown pool record.

First-year Jennifer Shahar earned her first finals appearance in the event with a seventh-place time of 1:03.08 in the prelims. She bested her performance in the finals with a personal-best NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:02.01 to finish in third-place overall. First-year Celia Frick added to the bunch with a first-place finish in the 'B' finals with a time of 1:03.36.

Columbia began the finals sessions with a runner-up finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Gabbie Tobak, Mikaila Gaffey, Christina Ray and Trudi Patrick combined for a time of 1:39.81. just short of the program record of 1:39.52.

The Lions placed three swimmers in the championship heat of the 400 IM on Friday as Alena Kluge posted a first-place time of 4:15.79 in the prelims, followed by Kristine Ng in sixth (4:20.64) and Mallory McKeon in eighth (4:21.11). Kluge went on to finish third overall in the 'A' finals with a time of 4:17.59. Ng swam her fastest time at 4:19.41 to place fifth overall and McKeon finished eighth with a time of 4:26.19.

Christina Ray put together an impressive day in the 100 fly. After a fourth-place finish in the prelims with a personal-best time of 54.08, Ray bested her time in the finals to finish third overall with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 53.94. Trudi Patrick also posted an NCAA 'B' cut time of 54.18 to sixth place.

Columbia remains in fourth place with 668 total points as Harvard leads the way with 952 points. The Lions will return tomorrow for the final day of action at 11 a.m. beginning with preliminaries, followed by the finals sessions at 6 p.m. Click the link above to view the full schedule of events.

Adult ticket prices are set for $4 one-day prelim tickets and $6 one-night finals tickets. Children (under 12) and student prices are $1 one-day prelims and $3 one-night finals tickets.
