BOX SCORE

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Columbia scored 10 runs in the first four frames, including a six-run fourth inning, to dismantle Rutgers at Bainton Field Wednesday, 13-2.

Columbia racked up 14 hits, including multi-hit games from David Vandercook, Aaron Silbar, Shane Adams and Robb Paller. Four Columbia pitchers combined to give up just five hits, while striking out 12 opposing hitters. First-year Ryan Marks and sophomore Thomas Crispi each sat down four Rutgers' batters.

Catcher Mike Fischer began the scoring in the second inning, as his RBI-double down the left field line plated Nick Maguire who led off with a single through the right side.

Columbia wasted little time adding to its lead in the third, as first-year Will Savage led off with a walk and steal, setting Vandercook up for a two-run long ball that cleared the right center fence. The homer was Vandercook's second of the season and pushed his RBI total up to 20. Paller would follow with a double to deep center and later score on a Nick Maguire grounder.

The Lions took complete control of the contest in the fourth, sending six base runners across home plate. Fischer opened the inning getting hit by a pitch and Gus Craig earned a four-pitch walk to give Columbia a pair of base runners with no outs. Centerfielder Jordan Serena instantly made it a 5-0 Columbia lead with a double down the left field line, bringing home Fischer.

Three batters later, a Paller drive to right resulted in another Lions' double and an RBI for Columbia's designated hitter. Silbar got in on the scoring in the next at bat, sending a 1-0 pitch out to center for a single, plating Vandercook. First-year Kyle Bartelman capped the inning a two-RBI single to the right side of the infield, bringing in Paller and Silbar.

Rutgers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring an unearned run on a wild pitch. It was the lone run of the frame for the Scarlet Knights, and after a scoreless fifth, Columbia added two more to its tally in the top of the sixth.

The heart of the lineup struck again for Columbia, as Vandercook started off with a double to center and Paller walked, with Silbar following behind with a two-bag shot to left center that scored the inning's lead-off man. Two batters later, Bartelman tallied his third RBI on a sacrifice fly that Paller tagged up on and scored.

Rutgers scored its second run in the seventh inning, as Chris Folinuscz drove in John Jennings, but the Lions limited the Scarlet Knights to just that one run.

Columbia improved its final tally to 13 with Serena knocking a sacrifice fly to left, sending home Logan Boyher who had raced around for his first triple of the season in the previous at bat.

Columbia returns home to host Princeton on Saturday. The Lions and Tigers will square off four times this weekend at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium in the first weekend of Gehrig Division action. First pitch on Saturday is at noon.
