Box Score

West Point, N.Y. – For the first road game of the season, the Columbia women's soccer team made the trip to Army (2-3) to finish opening weekend. Despite a 2-1 loss, the Lions scored its first goal of the year off the foot of junior Courtney Garrity.

The Lions were impressive on both ends of the pitch in the first half with poised all around play. The Black Knights applied early pressure with four corner-kicks in the opening five minutes of play. Columbia held strong stopping all attempts, including five total in the half. Dubick picked up two saves to hold Army scoreless through 45 minutes.

On the offensive end, Columbia put together a solid attack of their own that saw strong shots from veteran players. Coleen Rizzo fired a shot hitting the high bar near the midway point of the half, as the Lions continued to knock on the door. With a little less than three minutes left in the first half, Garrity would place the Lions on the board for the first goal of the season. Garrity stayed tough in a one-on-one battle in the left corner and beat the goalkeeper in the end to put the ball in the goal at 42:17. Columbia headed into the break with a 1-0 lead over the Black Knights.

In the second half, Army would again start the early attack. Despite a number of corner-kick stops by Columbia, Army found the back of the net at 57:32 to tie the game 1-1. The Black Knights kept things rolling for another score at 65:12 to erase the deficit and take a 2-1 lead.

The Lions continued the fight to put themselves in good position to tie the game. Columbia had eight shots in the second half, including some hard kicks from outside the box. However, Army would hold on in the final minutes to defeat the Lions 2-1.

Columbia drops to 0-1-1 on the season and will look to bounce back quickly on Tuesday, September 9 as they host Fairleigh Dickinson at 5 pm.
