BOSTON - Behind a top-10 finish from Tait Rutherford, the Columbia men finished fifth, while the women claimed seventh thanks to a 14th place finish from Natalie Tanner at today's Northeast Regional Cross Country Champioships in Boston.
Rutherford and Tanner, along with Jack Boyle, all earned All-Northeast Region recognition thanks to top-25 finishes at the event.
Men - 5th/37 teams
No. 2 Syracuse claimed the championship thanks to having the top three runners in the event. The Orange had the overall top place finisher in Justin Knight, who took the tape in 30:29, just ahead of second place teammate Colin Bennie (30:30) and third place finisher Martin Hehir (30:31).
No. 9 Iona was just behind Syracuse in second place, followed by third place Cornell and fourth place Dartmouth.
Rutherford claimed ninth place on the individual side, thanks to a career-best 10K on the cross country course of 30:48.0. Boyle joined his teammate with earning all-region honors, clocking a 31:19.8 for 25th place.
Sam Ritz was the next Columbia finisher, running in a group with teammates Max Norris and Dustin Wilson. Ritz claimed 39th in 31:34.5, Norris was 41st in 31:35.8 and Wilson clocked a 31:37.2 for 42nd.

Women - 7th/38 teams
The Lions finished seventh at the tightly contested Regional, behind three ranked teams. No. 4 Providence was first, No. 19 Syracuse claimed second while Brown slid into third. Also ahead of Columbia in the 38-team field was fourth place Boston College, No. 29 Yale in fifth, and Harvard, who finished sixth.
No. 4 Providence led in the championship run by a second place finish from Sarah Collins in 20:29. Collins could not catch Dartmouth's Dana Giordano, who claimed the individual title in 20:26 and helped the Big Green to an eighth place finish.
The Columbia women were led by Natalie Tanner, who ran her second fastest 6K of her career. The junior claimed 14th place, crossing the line in 21:05.
Olivia Sadler was the next Columbia finisher, taking home 27th place in 21:31. Her senior classmate Leila Mantilla was next for the Lions in 46th place at 21:53, followed by Pegah Khosravi-Kamrani in 51st at 21:57 and Emily Acker in 66th at 22:14.
