Track & Field Takes Off At George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Columbia track & field teams put together many impressive performances at the George Mason Spring Invitational on Saturday.
The Lions got a first place performance from Joanna Koronios in the hammer throw, one of two events she took part in. Koronios went 52.37m (171'10"), a season best mark by over two feet. The senior went on to take eighth place in the discus at 40.38m (132'5.75").
Four members of the women's team combined to tie the second fastest time in school history in the 4x100m relay. Iris Chijioke, Jaycee Parker, Akua Obeng-Akrofi and Ashley Cunningham clocked a 46.51 for third place, right behind second place VCU (46.40) and first place Dartmouth (46.33).
The quartet all went on to have top times in indivudal races at George Mason. Parker clocked a 55.87 in the 400m dash, the seventh fastest time in school history, and close to her personal best of 54.92. Chijioke ran her fastest time this season in the 100m hurdles, clocking a 14.15 for third place. In the 100m dash, Cunningham took third at 11.77, with Obeng-Akrofi in fourth at 11.78, as both times are in the top five of Columbia school history. Obeng-Akrofi also took third in the 200m dash, crossing the line in 24.17.
Another top finish for the women came from Anna Williams in the long jump. Williams took third place at 5.77m (18'11.25").
In the women's 800m run, Brittney Wade came up with a huge fourth place finish, clocking the fourth fastest time in school history at 2:08.10 for a personal best by close to two seconds.
The men's team had a relay of its own that performed well. The 4x400m relay team of Corey Hammond, Ronald Busby, Yelnats Calvin and Johnathan Sowah combined for a 3:17.40 to take third place.
Earning a second place finish in the 1500m run was Robert Napolitano, who crossed the line in a personal best 3:44.69.
In the 400m hurdles, Hammond again took third place when he crossed the line in 53.57.
The Lions are back in action next weekend, with the Larry Ellis Invitational on tap for Friday and Saturday at Princeton.
