NEW YORK – In an exciting afternoon match at Rocco B. Commisso Stadium, the Columbia women's soccer team bounced back to drop Army, 2-1, on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Lions found the back of the net in both periods to improve to 4-3-0 overall and cap a four-game homestand with three victories.
The Black Knights capitalized on its first attempt at goal in the opening seconds with Bailey Widman sending in corner kick for the score in just 40 seconds of play. Army took an early 1-0 lead in the first minute, but the Lions responded with poised pressure. At 16:22, first-year Emma Anderson found a streaking Rachel Alexander on the inside left of box as she fired in the score for Columbia to tie the game at 1-1. The goal marked Alexander's third of the season in as many games.
The Lions defense stood strong in the first half with Allison Spencer making five saves in goal, along with smothering aggression from defender Natalie Ambrose sparking the backline.
With a tie game at the break, Columbia returned in the second half on the attack. The Lions had a few good looks sail just wide of the net while knocking on the door for the score. In the 72 minute, Ambrose used her lighting speed down the left side of the field to disrupt the Army defense and find an open Anderson at the top of the box. This time Anderson would knock one in for the score off the assist from Ambrose to give Columbia a 2-1 lead.
Despite a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks by the Black Knights, the Lions defense remained strong in the second half with Gabby Dubick in goal to hold on for the 2-1 victory. The win marks Columbia's first win over Army since 2006.
The Lions will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7p.m. as they hit the road to begin Ivy League play at Cornell.
