CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Columbia women's rowing team completed its fall schedule at the Rivanna Romp on Sunday, hosted by Virginia at the Rivanna River.
Crews from Virginia, Duke, Penn, Louisville, Clemson and Columbia made up the 19 total entries in the varsity eight. Columbia's varsity eight completed the course in 13:51.3 to take ninth out of 19 crews. The Lions had three entries in the race with close times between its top two. Columbia's B entry posted a time of 13:58.1 to finish 12th.
"It was definitely the fastest field of crews we have seen at the Romp in the five years we have been going to this race,” said head coach Scott Ramsey. “The UVA varsity smashed the course record and made a lot of fast crews look very mediocre this weekend. We weren't happy with our result, but the positive takeaway for us is just how many seats are up for grabs throughout our NCAA boat classes entering the winter training cycle. This is the tightest margin we've ever had between our top two crews at the end of a fall season, and it is a very good situation for the team right now. We need really fierce intra-squad competition to push our top end speed faster."
Columbia's C entry completed the course in 14:57.2. Meanwhile, the novice eight team took seventh out of nine novice crews with a time of 16:22.2.
The Lions return to competition on March 18 at the Governor's Cup at Canal 54 in Fellsmere, Florida.
