LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Columbia baseball team lost a hard-fought 4-1 decision at Long Beach State Thursday night. The Lions brought the tying runs to the plate in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but could not get over the hump as they dropped to 2-9.
Thomas Crispi tossed five scoreless innings in his first start of the year. He allowed just two hits and struck out three.
The Dirtbages (12-5) put two on the board in the sixth to open the scoring. Two consecutive walks set up a sacrifice to push both runners into scoring position. Brock Lundquist knocked in both of his teammates with a base-hit up the middle.
In the seventh, the Lions cut the deficit in half when Robb Paller recorded a single and Kyle Bartelman reached on an error while trying to lay down a sac bunt. Long Beach State threw out Paller trying to score from third on a grounder to short, but Nick Maguire worked a walk to load the bases. Joe Engel came up with two outs and legged out an infield single to make it 2-1.
However, another leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning helped the Dirtbags restore the two-run cushion. Tristan Mercadel's base-hit to left put runners on the corners with one out for Garrett Hampson, who knocked in the third run of the night with a groundout.
Long Beach State's Alex Muzzi wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
Ethan Abrams took the decision (0-1), allowing three runs in 1.1 innings.
The Lions and Dirtbags continue their series on Friday, March 18 at 9 p.m. ET.
