Columbia rallies to force extras in game one before Santana’s dominant outing secures game two win
HANOVER, N.H. — Columbia baseball split its Sunday doubleheader at Dartmouth, falling 3-2 in 10 innings in the opener before responding with a 3-1 victory in game two behind a dominant outing by Thomas Santana. The Lions improved to 5-14 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play, while Dartmouth moved to 4-12 and 1-4 in the Ancient Eight.
Game 1
Columbia baseball battled back to force extra innings but came up short, 3-2, in a 10-inning contest in the series opener.
Jimmy Chadwell paced the Lions offensively with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate. Jack Kail added a two-hit performance, while Ben Fishel contributed two hits and a run scored as the Lions totaled nine hits in the contest.
The Big Green struck in the bottom of the first when Stefan Di Corrado was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing Nico Banez home from third. Dartmouth then added a second run on a fielder's choice by Sam Andersen to take a 2-0 lead.
The Lions chipped away in the fourth inning, using a leadoff double by Kail and a wild pitch to put the senior on third with no outs. After a walk, Cole Fellows recorded an RBI groundout to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
Columbia continued to apply pressure through the middle innings and finally broke through to tie the game in the seventh. Fishel led things off with a single and later came around to score on an RBI single from Chadwell, evening the game at 2-2.
Dartmouth nearly regained the lead in the bottom of the frame after a single and a sacrifice bunt put the go-ahead run in scoring position. DeMastrie followed with a base hit up the middle, but Fishel gunned down the runner at the plate to keep things tied up before the game headed to extras.
Columbia threatened to take control in the top of the 10th. With two outs, Temesvary notched a single to right before Jack Kail followed with a base hit up the middle, moving Temesvary to third. Kail then stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but Dartmouth turned to reliever Mac Burke, who induced a groundout to first to escape the jam and keep the game tied at 2-2.
Dartmouth answered in the bottom half, capitalizing on a defensive miscue before delivering a walk-off RBI single to center field to secure the 3-2 victory.
Dartmouth starter Nate Isler lasted 9.2 innings, allowing just two runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two. Burke (1-2) only had to earn the final out for his first victory of the season.
After allowing two runs in the opening frame, Alex Sotiropoulos settled in to deliver 6.0 innings, giving up just two runs on two hits while striking out five.
Game 2
Santana (2-3) worked 8.0 innings while allowing just one run on seven hits, striking out four and walking two and came up with big outs throughout the ballgame to keep Columbia in front after grabbing an early lead.
With the victory, Santana earned his 13th career win, moving into a tie for 10th place on Columbia's all-time list.
Columbia jumped in front in the top of the first, using an Anthony Temesvary RBI single to center field to bring in Chadwell. However, a leadoff walk, a sacrifice and an RBI single from DeMastrie evened things up in the bottom of the frame.
The score remained that way until the Lions broke through in the fifth inning behind a Jackson Brewer triple and an RBI double that went off the wall in right from Kail. In the seventh, Kail was in the middle of things again, recording an infield single with two outs to set the table for Temesavary. The sophomore delivered his second RBI of the afternoon, lining a single through the left side to extend the lead to 3-1.
At the plate, Columbia totaled nine hits, with Kail going 2-for-5. Temesvary and Fishel each went 2-for-4.
Out of the bullpen, Evan Kleinhans shut the door in the ninth inning, tossing a scoreless frame with two strikeouts to secure the save.
