LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State scored four runs in the second inning and led the rest of the way in an 8-3 victory over the Columbia baseball team Friday night. The Lions fall to 2-10 on the year.
The Dirtbags notched back-to-back walks to start the second and an error loaded the bases with no outs. Another base-on-balls brought in the first score and Garrett Hampson ripped a two-run double. With runners on second and third, Alex Muzzi dropped down a squeeze bunt to make in 4-0. Long Beach State tacked on another run in the fifth before Columbia got on the board.
Logan Boyher tucked in a solo homer inside the foul pole in leftfield ot start the seventh inning. Nick Maguire reached on a walk and Chandler Bengtson singled to set up a sacrifice situation. Joe Engel laid down the bunt to the pitcher and the throw to first was off the mark to bring in Maguire. Will Savage drove in Bengtson with a sac fly to pull the Lions within 5-3.
However, David Banuelos belted a three-run shot in the bottom of the frame to give the momentum back to the Dirtbags.
George Thanopoulos fell to 0-3 on the year. Boyher and Bengtson both went 2-for-4 from the dish.
Columbia will take on Long Beach State again tomorrow, March 18, at 5 p.m.
