WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Columbia baseball team downed Army West Point, 13-3, Wednesday afternoon. The Lions (4-11) racked up five extra-base hits and used a strong performance from George Thanopoulos to pick up their second straight win.
Thanopoulos (1-3) had a no-hitter going until the sixth, his final inning of work. He allowed three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
A two-run triple from Joe Engel opened the scoring in the top of the second. Columbia tacked on three more in the third and that would be all Thanopoulos would need.
Will Savage posted a leadoff triple and scored on a single from John Kinne. With runners on the corners, Kyle Bartelman reached on an infield single to make it 4-0. Logan Boyher walked to load the bases and with two outs, Engel was issued a free pass to add another insurance run.
Mark Patrick Flynn chipped in a pinch-hit double to bring in Boyher in the fifth. An error brought in two more runs in the sixth and Robb Paller provided a two-run blast to extend the margin to 10-0.
Army put three on the board in the bottom half of the sixth, but Columbia scratched out three more in the ninth to wrap up the scoring. Bartelman tallied the Lions' third triple of the day for an RBI, while Ben Porter and Savage drove in runs later in the frame.
Nick Maguire was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Bartelman finished 2-for-5.
The Lions will open a three-game series against Connecticut on Friday, March 25 for its home opener. First pitch of the single-game is slated for 3 p.m. Columbia and the Huskies will finish the slate with a doubleheader in Storrs, Connecticut Saturday.
