PHILADELPHIA - The Columbia men and women both set school records in the 4x800m relay at this weekend's Penn Relays.
During Saturday's portion of the meet, three rookie runners and a junior took off for the men, including Josiah Langstaff, Sam Ritz, Alek Sauer and Robert Napolitano. The Lions were up near the front from the gun, crossing the line in 7:20.41, just ahead of the 7:20.53 which was set in 2012 by Mark Feigen, Brendon Fish, Kyle Merber and Harrison McFann.
Columbia finished second in the race, right behind Penn State's Championship run in 7:17.37. Along with the school record, the Lions broke the previous Ivy League record in the event, as Columbia now owns five of the six fastest times in the 4x800m relay in Ivy League history.
Prior to the men's race, the women were able to crush a school record by over four seconds in the same event. The team of Brittney Wade, Libby Kokes, Olivia Sadler and Sarah Hardie finished fifth in 8:34.23, topping the effort a season ago from Wade, Sadler, Hardie and Nicole Bauer at 8:38.35. The school record effort was the third fastest time in the event in Ivy League history.
Other highlights for the men included Corey Hammond finishing 18th in the 400m hurdls at 54.04, and Dustin Wilson taking 19th in the 5K for a career best 14:21.44.
The women took eighth in the sprint medley behind a 3:59.73 from Ashley Cunningham, Akua Obeng-Akrofi, Jaycee Parker and Devon Towell, while Anna Williams took seventh in the triple jump at 12.29m (40'4").
The Lions now look forward to the Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships, which get under way on Saturday, May 7 at Princeton.
