Columbia Suffers 2-0 Defeat at Penn
10/12/2018 5:19:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Lions tried to mount a late rally with a strong attack, but were ultimately held off the scoresheet by the Quakers.
PHILADELPHIA – Penn used a score late in the first half and another one early in the second to come away with a 2-0 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Friday afternoon. The Lions dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play with the defeat.
After falling behind by two goals, Columbia was able to maintain possession and keep the ball in the Quakers (7-6, 3-1) zone, but Penn was able to limit Columbia's shot chances for much of the period and withstood a flurry of corner attempts in the final five minutes to hang on for the win.
Much of the first half was a defensive battle with the teams combining for just four shots in the opening 15 minutes of action. However, Penn got on the board in the 30th minute when Jordyn Thies long shot attempt was deflected in by Madison Jiranek to open the scoring.
The Quakers doubled the margin in the 41st minute off Alexa Schneck's seventh goal of the year. Erin Kelly sent a long pass from near the 25-yard mark to Schneck inside the circle, who fired off a quick shot that beat Katie Dempsey into the left side of the cage.
The Lions return home for a non-conference matchup with Fairfield this Sunday, October 14 at 12 p.m. Admission is free and the game will be shown live on ESPN+.
