Lions Back In Action With Road Tilt at Penn, Home Contest Against Fairfield

Columbia will aim to get back on track with a Friday afternoon meeting against the Quakers in Philly before returning home for a Sunday matinee against the Stags
NEWS/NOTES
• The Lions are coming off their first Ivy League loss of the season after a 4-0 defeat to No. 5 Princeton. Katie Dempsey made a career-high 17 saves in the loss.
• Columbia is 11-11 all-time against Penn and have won six of the last seven meetings. Last year, the Lions claimed a 2-0 victory at home. Meghan Fahey and Jennifer Trieschman each potted goals and Katie Dempsey made seven saves.
• The Lions are 10-4 against Fairfield, taking eight of the last nine decisions. Columbia erased a three-goal deficit on the road last year to claim a 4-3 overtime win. Katherine Cavanaugh scored the Lions' first goal and Dempsey stopped 12 shots.
• Dempsey was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1 after stopping four shots while posting her second clean sheet of the season against the Big Red. She is currently second in the conference with a .732 save percentage.
- The shutout was the fifth of her career, moving her into a tie for third on Columbia's career list. The all-time record is 10, held by Gena Miller.
• Katherine Cavanaugh tied the single-game record with three assists in the win over Hofstra on Sep. 15.
• Six of Columbia's first-years made their collegiate debuts in the season opener against Quinnipiac and all six position players have tallied at least one point.
• Columbia was picked fourth in the inaugural Ivy League Preseason Poll. The Lions received 75 points from members of the media. Princeton (14 first place votes) took the top spot, followed by Princeton (two first place votes), Penn, the Lions, Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown.
• Columbia returns a pair of All-Ivy League performers in senior goalkeeper Katie Dempsey and junior forward Jennifer Trieschman.
• Columbia's captains are seniors Katherine Cavanaugh, Danielle Buttinger and junior Kelly McCarthy.
• Head coach Caroline Nelson-Nichols is in her fourth year at the helm of Columbia. The two-time U.S. Olympian holds a career record of 32-29 overall and 11-13 in Ivy League play.
SCOUTING PENN
• The Quakers went 1-1 last week after edging Dartmouth on the road, 3-2, in overtime before dropping a 2-1 decision at Lafayette Monday.
• Of Penn's six losses, five have come against teams ranked in the NFHCA's top-25. The Quakers also have a season-opening upset win of No. 14 Wake Forest (1-0 in double OT) under their belt.
• The Quakers' offense is averaging just 1.25 goals per game, but have been stingy on defense, surrendering just 2.00 to their opponents.
• Alexa Schneck paces the attack with six goals and four assists for 16 points - all team-highs.
• In between the pipes, Ava Rosata has started all 12 games and has a 1.83 GAA, .689 save percentage and three shutouts.
SCOUTING FAIRFIELD
• After a 9-1 start, the Stags have dropped two of their last three heading into a Friday night MAAC matchup at Rider. Most recently, Fairfield got by Bryant in conference action, 1-0, before falling at Providence, 2-1, Sunday.
• Fairfield is holding opponents to just 1.15 goals and 10.0 shots per game.
• Emma Matiach is the Stags' leading scorer with eight goals, five assists and 21 points. Danielle Profita is also one to watch with seven scores.
• Zoe Rosen has seen the bulk of the action in goal and holds an 8-3 record with a 1.28 GAA, .810 save percentage and four clean sheets.
