The Wildcats came back from a two-goal deficit to force and won it with 1:38 left to prevent a shootout.
NEW YORK – Villanova came back from a two-goal deficit to claim a 4-3 victory in double overtime against the Columbia field hockey team. The Lions (7-7) made a strong bid in the second overtime, posting four shots on goal, but Ana Sherwood stepped into a shot from the left wing and found the right side of the cage to give the Wildcats (8-8) the win.
Isabella Collins registered Columbia's first two shots of the game, and both went in. Collins finished a centering pass from Danielle Buttinger in the 16th minute to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later, Buttinger connected with Collins again. This time, Buttinger sent a soft aerial pass over a charging goalkeeper and Collins tapped in home for her third goal of the season.
However, Villanova cut the deficit in half with 39 seconds remaining the first half when Emily Clarke scooped up a rebound after a corner to make it 2-1.
Columbia restored the two-goal cushion in the 39th minute when Kelsey Farkas pushed a pass to Katherine Cavanaugh stationed in front, who deflected the ball in for her second of the year.
The Wildcats started the rally in the 43rd minute when Lydia Syndor and Megan Vermeil had a 2-on-1 opportunity in transition. Vermeil swept a pass from the right side to Sydnor on the doorstep to trim the margin to 3-2. Villanova knotted things up on a similar play to its first goal. Off a corner, two initial shots were blocked by the Lions' defenders, but a third attempt wound up on Emma McLaughlin's stick and found the back of the net.
After a fairly even first overtime, Columbia turned on the pressure in the second extra frame. Erika Miller was forced to stop four shots for the Wildcats and the Lions nearly won it in the 87th minute after generating a corner. Farkas inserted to the right wing, took a return pass back and crossed it all the way to the left with Jaimie McCormick wide open at the post. McCormick could not quite tee up the shot and the attempt went wide of the yawning cage.
Next up for the Lions is a showdown at Yale next Saturday, October 27. Game time is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
