
VMI & Northern Colorado Start Dual Season For Wrestling

The first dual of the season takes place at home this Saturday for the Columbia wrestling team, as the Lions battle VMI at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in University Gymnasium.
NEW YORK – The first dual of the season takes place at home this weekend for the Columbia wrestling team, as the Lions battle VMI at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in the Dodge Fitness Center's University (Blue) Gymnasium.
Columbia follows up Saturday's dual with a 6:00 p.m. match against Northern Colorado on Monday. Both matches can be seen live on ESPN+ and will have live results on twitter through @ColumbiaWR.
ABOUT THE LIONS
After winning the Mat Town Open on Nov. 25, Columbia took last weekend off to re-group prior to the pair of duals over the three-day span.
Through three open tournaments, senior Max Elling (165) and rookie Mike Kelly (125) have both eclipsed the 10-win plateau. Elling is tied for the team lead with four pins, as first-year Matt Kazimir also has four falls to his name, along with a 9-1 record at 133.
Kazimir came away with a pair of tournament wins so far, having claimed titles at both the Black Knight Invite at Army, and the Mat Town Open. Senior Dan Reed also came away with the 157-pound title at the Black Knight Invite, as well as the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler award. The tournament at Army also saw Joe Manchio earn a title at 125, and Laurence Kosoy win the 165-pound championship.
ABOUT VMI
The Keydets enter the weekend at 2-4 on the season, having also taken part in the Hokie Open and the Keystone Classic. VMI has won its last two duals, having topped Sacred Heart (20-19) and Davidson (29-13) after losing to George Mason, Bucknell, Cleveland State, and Buffalo to start the season.
Junior Neal Richards leads the way, posting an 11-3 record at 174 pounds, including a 6-0 mark in duals. Senior Hunter Starner is the next highest in wins at 7-6, having gone 3-3 in dual matches.
ABOUT NORTHERN COLORADO
The Bears opened the season with a 22-14 loss to West Virginia, winning four of 10 matches in the dual. Northern Colorado fell to 0-2 with a 34-4 loss to Fresno State, and also competed at their own open on November 10, and the Cliff Keen Invitational last weekend. Prior to the match with the Lions, the Bears battle VMI and Hofstra on Sunday, Dec. 9.
So far this season, sophomore Trenton Schultz has the most wins on the team with a 5-3 record at 184 pounds. Jacob Seely has a 2-0 record at 197, earning both victories in the dual matches.
AFTER THE DUALS
The Lions will be off through Christmas before traveling to Chattanooga, Tennessee for the two-day Southern Scuffle, starting on New Year's Day.
