NEW YORK—First-year Columbia women's tennis player Jennifer Kerr has been named the Northeast Region "Player to Watch" by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the organization announced its regional winners for the 2017-18 season on Monday morning.
In her first year of collegiate tennis, Kerr also earned Second Team All-Ivy League honors in singles. As Columbia's No. 2 singles player, Kerr finished the year with a 21-9 overall record and 6-1 Ivy League record. She led the squad in dual match wins (15) and Ivy League victories (six), ranked second on the squad in singles wins (21) and was 13-3 at the No. 2 singles position. She also won six straight matches late in the season. Kerr is a Carlsbad, Calif. native who was honored with the Evelyn Houseman Lifetime Junior Sportsmanship Award by the Southern California Tennis Association earlier in the year.
For each of its 12 collegiate regions, ITA coaches select recipients for various awards: Coach of the Year, Assistant Coach of the Year, Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award winner, Rookie of the Year, Player to Watch, Most Improved Senior, Senior Player of the Year, Community Service Award recipient and Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award winner.
Columbia concluded its 2017-18 season in third place in the Ivy League with a 4-3 record, along with a 12-8 overall dual match record.
