Columbia Makes 2018 Debut With Pair of Home Contests

The Lions have a pair of games this Labor Day Weekend, hosting Quinnipiac Friday and Monmouth Monday - both under the lights.
NEWS/NOTES
• The Lions are coming off a 9-8 overall campaign in 2017, marking the eighth time in the past 10 seasons they have finished above .500. Columbia's 4-3 mark in Ivy League play put it tied for third in the conference standings, which matched the program's best finish last achieved in 2014.
• Columbia was picked fourth in the inaugural Ivy League Preseason Poll Tuesday. The Lions received 75 points from members of the media. Princeton (14 first place votes) took the top spot, followed by Princeton (two first place votes), Penn, the Lions, Cornell, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown.
• In season openers, the Lions are 10-12 and will be looking to start a year 1-0 for the first time since 2014.
• Columbia is 15-7 in home debuts all-time and are 5-2 when beginning a season in the confines of the Baker Athletics Complex.
• The Lions are 4-3 all-time against Quinnipiac with the last meeting coming in 2011. The Bobcats claimed that contest, 3-1, in New York.
• Columbia owns a 7-3 mark against Monmouth. The teams have not faced off since a 4-0 Hawks win in West Long Branch in 2011.
• Columbia returns a pair of All-Ivy League performers in senior goalkeeper Katie Dempsey and junior forward Jennifer Trieschman.
- Dempsey started all 17 games games in goal last season and boasted a 2.77 GAA with a .701 save percentage and three shutouts. Her three clean sheets put her tied for fifth on the Lions' career list.
- Trieschman netted six goals, good for second on the team, including a hat trick against Holy Cross last season.
• Columbia's captains are seniors Katherine Cavanaugh, Danielle Buttinger and junior Kelly McCarthy.
• The Lions will welcome seven newcomers to the roster, hailing from six different states and one international student-athlete (New Zealand).
• Head coach Caroline Nelson-Nichols enters her fourth year at the helm of Columbia. The two-time U.S. Olympian holds a career record of 26-25 overall and 9-12 in Ivy League play.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
• The Bobcats split its first two matches of 2018, falling at home to No. 13 Boston College, 7-0, before claiming a 2-1 victory at Vermont Sunday.
• Quinnipiac went 6-12 overall and 3-4 in the BIG EAST in 2017.
• Valerie Perkisn and Makayla Adams were Quinnipiac's goal scorers in the Vermont win.
• Alicia Galasso and Hannah Teicher each started one game last week. Both made six saves with Teicher earning the win against the Catamounts.
SCOUTING MONMOUTH
• The Hawks also registered a 1-1 mark during their opening weekend. Monmouth dropped a 5-1 decision at No. 18 Saint Joseph's before a 3-2 overtime triumph against Ohio in its home opener.
• Monmouth went 15-4 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC, reaching the conference championship game in 2017.
• Four players have lit the lamp for the Hawks thus far. Elyssa Okken has added an assist to take the early point lead.
• Gabi Millan started both games in net. She has 14 saves and a .667 save percentage thus far.
