After Columbia took a 2-1 lead, the Bobcats scored twice in eight minutes to spoil the Lions' debut.
NEW YORK – In a back-and-forth contest, Quinnipiac edged the Columbia field hockey team, 3-2, in the Lions' season opener Friday night. With the score deadlocked at 1-1 at the half, Columbia took the lead in the 37th minute before the Bobcats (2-1) answered 22 seconds later and took the lead for good in the 47th minute.
The Lions went in front when Jennifer Trieschman shuffled a pass to Danielle Buttinger in the scoring area. Buttinger spun and got behind a pair of defenders to light the lamp just after the intermission. Off the restart, Quinnipiac came down the right side where Jess Halley fed Marisa Larkin in the scoring area. Larkin used a reverse shot with Katie Dempsey charging off her line for the equalizer.
Anna Walmsley provided the game-winner for the Bobcats just over eight minutes later when a long stretch pass from Amanda Blum wound up behind Columbia's defense. Walmsley was left one-on-one for her first goal of the year.
After combining for just five total attempts in the opening 35 minutes, both teams triggered the offensive attack with the Lions outshooting Quinnipiac, 9-7, in the second half.
Both of the first half scores came off of penalty corners. The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Valerie Perkins scooped up a rebound and connected with Elisa van Winkel, who beat a sprawling Katie Dempsey after her initial save.
Columbia answered in the 21st minute when the Lions drew a corner. Maaike Blindenbach opted to feed Brooke Gasser on the left wing and the first-year found Katie Koester driving to the middle. Koester's redirection trickled into the back of the net to knot things up.
The Lions will remain at home to take on Monmouth on Labor Day, Monday, September 3 for a 6:30 p.m. contest. Admission to Columbia Field Hockey matches are free. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
