The senior forward scored 11 seconds into the extra session to lift the Lions to a weekend sweep in Providence
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jennifer Trieschman's goal 11 seconds into overtime lifted the Columbia field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Bryant Sunday afternoon. The Lions trailed 1-0 after a second half goal by the Bulldogs, but tied the game off a corner five minutes later to force the extra frame.
Columbia (5-3) earned its first weekend split of the season after taking down Brown, 4-2, in its Ivy League opener yesterday.
The Lions took the opening draw of overtime right down the field and Trieschman drove to the net, fired an initial shot that was kicked away before scooping up the rebound and burying the second chance for her sixth goal of the season. Trieschman has now scored in four consecutive games and has 12 points during her current tear.
Bryant (2-7) was held to just two shots for the entire game, but wound up in front after a penalty stroke was awarded in the 45th minute. Brittany Gouws faked to her left and scored into the right side of the cage to put the Bulldogs in front, but the lead was short-lived.
Kelsey Farkas went into traffic off the set piece and potted her third of the year off a scramble in front with just under 20 minutes to go. The score remained that way until Trieschman's tally in OT.
The Lions are back in action next Sunday, September 30 against Cornell for their "Gold Game" for pediatric cancer. Columbia is partnering with Go4TheGoal to generate awareness and raise funds to make a difference in the lives of kids battling cancer. Donate to the Lions' team page by clicking here. Additionally, a limited number of gold T-shirts will be sold on the day of the game for $20 with all proceeds benefiting Go4TheGoal.
