Columbia Picks Up Third Straight Win; Tops Cornell, 2-0
9/30/2018 3:12:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Lions are off to a 2-0 start in Ivy League play for the second consecutive year and just the third time in program history (2011, 2017).
NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey team picked up its third consecutive win after a 2-0 shutout of Cornell Sunday afternoon. The Lions used four saves from Katie Dempsey, who posted her second clean sheet of the season and fourth of her career, and goals from Danielle Buttinger and Katherine Cavanaugh, to move to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in Ivy League play.
Dempsey set the tone early, hitting the deck and using her pads for a key save. in the fifth minute to keep the game scoreless. From there, the entire Columbia defensive unit remained in solid position, taking away time and space to limit the Big Red (2-7, 0-2) to just one more shot on goal in the period.
Offensively, the Lions generated a wide variety of scoring chances but were only able to get one by Cornell's Maddie Henry, who made 13 saves in the game. In the 18th minute, Columbia moved the ball around the midfield and worked the ball into the right corner. Jennifer Trieschman sent a long pass to the middle that Cavanaugh was able to touch-pass to Buttinger to her right. The senior sent a quick shot to the short side for her fourth goal of the season.
The Big Red's best scoring chance came in the closing moments of the first half when they countered a Lions penalty corner. Claire Jones took a pass from the left wing, spun and fired a shot that a sliding Dempsey turned away to keep Columbia in front at the break.
In the 41st minute, the Lions doubled the advantage when Allison Smith sent a long pass down the left side to Cavanaugh. The senior wound up just inside the circle looking for a deflection in front and got one off a Cornell defender's stick. The ball popped up and went in through the upper right corner of the game while she was battling Emma Domich for position in front.
Columbia remained aggressive on offense and continued to limit the Big Red's chances the rest of the way to move to 2-0 in Ivy League play for the second consecutive season and just the third time in program history (2011, 2017).
The Lions return to action Friday, October 5, when they host No. 5 Princeton at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and the game will be shown live on ESPN+.
