NEW YORK - The Columbia field hockey team will return to the Baker Athletics Complex this weekend to face Cornell on Sunday, September 30 for a 12 p.m. start. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
COLUMBIA TEAMING WITH GO4THEGOAL FOR INAUGURAL GOLD GAME
Columbia is joining the movement to "turn September gold" in support of the battle against pediatric cancer with Go4TheGoal, an organization that works with hospitals across the country to provide financial assistance, grant wishes, develop and fund unique hospital programs, and fund innovative research. NEWS/NOTES
• The Lions earned their first weekend sweep after taking down Brown, 4-2, in their Ivy League opener and picking up a 2-1 overtime victory against Bryant.
• Columbia is 1-0 to begin conference play for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. The Lions are looking for its second consecutive 2-0 start in the Ancient Eight and just the third time in program history (2011, 2017).
• The Lions are 5-17 all-time against Cornell, but are 4-3 in the last seven meetings. Last season, Columbia edged the Big Red 2-1 in Ithaca. Katie Dempsey made 14 saves, including a crucial one with seven seconds left to preserve the one-goal cushion. Meghan Fahey registered her first career goal in the contest.
• Columbia is second in the Ivy League, averaging 2.25 assists per game.
• The Lions have also emerged as one of the best defenses in the conference, allowing just 15 goals on the year - the second fewest in the Ancient Eight.
• Jennifer Trieschman has goals in four consecutive games and is second in the Ivy League with seven goals, one off the pace of Bente van Jlijmen of Harvard, and 17 points.
SCOUTING CORNELL
• The Big Red snapped a three-game skid with a 3-1 victory over Colgate Tuesday afternoon. Cornell opened the Ivy League slate with a 2-1 loss at home against Penn Saturday.
• Maddy Conklin leads the squad with three goals. That accounts for 38 percent of Cornell's goals.
• Gabby DePetro has dished out three assists.
• Maddie Henry has started seven of the Big Red's eight contests. She is 1-6 with a 3.43 GAA and a .695 save percentage.
