Laranetto Nets Two Goals, Lions Win Ivy League Opener at Brown, 3-1

Danny Laranetto's first two career goals start the Lions 1-0 in the Ivy League.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Three second half goals, including the first two of junior midfielder Danny Laranetto's career, shot the Columbia men's soccer team past Brown, 3-1, in what was the Ivy League opener for both teams Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.

The win improves Columbia to 4-2-1 overall and marks the second straight year they've scored three goals against the Bears to start the Ivy League season in the win column. Brown drops to 4-4-0 and saw its two-game winning streak come to an end.

Laranetto subbed on in the 30th minute and made all the difference, scoring on his only two shot attempts of the game. After a scoreless first half, the Washington, Connecticut native put the Lions on top with his first career goal in the 55th minute. Sophomore Beto Carrillo laid the ball off for Laranetto, who dribbled into the penalty area, beat a Brown defender and scored with a shot toward the right post.

The Lions padded the lead less than five minutes later. This time, it was Carrillo who put the ball in the back of the net, scoring an unassisted goal off a long strike from the top of the box that curved by Brown goalkeeper Max Gross and into the top-left corner. The goal was Carrillo's first of the season and third of his career.

Brown got back in the game when Toby Howell scored in the 69th minute to cut the margin in half. However, Laranetto scored again with 6:35 remaining to put the game to bed. With the Lions threatening, senior Kynan Rocks saved the ball from going out of bounds on the end line and set up Laranetto in the middle for the clean look and two-goal advantage.

The Lions outshot the Bears, 19-9, and took six corners to Brown's four. Each team put seven shots on target. Senior Francisco Agrest and junior John Denis led the game with four shots apiece. Senior goalkeeper Dylan Castanheira made a season-high six saves, including one in the final minute to keep it a two-goal game.

Columbia travels to Pitt on Tuesday, where the Lions will look to avenge a 1-0 loss from last season in New York. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
