Varsity Eight Takes 7th at Head of the Housatonic

Top two varsity boats finish top 10
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's rowing team opened the fall season at the Head of the Housatonic Saturday at Indian Well State Park in Shelton, Connecticut. The Lions sent four varsity eights and were led by a seventh-place finish from their top crew.
All four Columbia boats raced in the Women's Collegiate 8+ Div. I event. The Lions were four of thirty crews from Boston College, Boston University, Fordham, Northeastern, Syracuse, UMass, Wellesley College and Yale to compete in the race. Columbia's second varsity eight also earned a top-10 finish in ninth. The top two Columbia boats were separated by 12 seconds.
"I thought our results showed respectable depth," third-year head coach Emerson Curry stated. "It was good to get most of the team down a head race course. Fall racing is a lot of fun and it's been a couple of years since we were in the mix."
Columbia's third varsity crew finished among the top half of the field in 13th, six seconds back of the second varsity. The fourth varsity boat came in 24th.
The Lions look ahead to the 55th annual Head of the Charles, which will take place this weekend on the Charles River in Boston.
