No. 15 Harvard Holds Off Lions, 2-1, in Season Finale
11/9/2019 1:19:00 PM | Field Hockey
Kelsey Farkas notched her eighth of the season late, but Columbia's upset-bid came up just short.
NEW YORK – Kelsey Farkas' goal in the 58th minute pulled Columbia field hockey within a goal, but No. 15 Harvard held on for a 2-1 victory Saturday morning. The Lions finish the 2019 season 7-9 overall and 3-4 in Ivy League play.
Columbia did a good job maintaining possession and limiting the Crimson's (13-4, 6-1) chances, however, Bente van Vlijmen converted off a corner in the 13th minute to put Harvard in front. The score remained 1-0 into the half and van Vlijmen doubled the advantage after scooping up a turnover and firing a reverse shot into the cage in the 35th minute.
The Lions made a strong push in the fourth quarter, generating four corner opportunities, but could not break through until the late tally from Farkas. Jennifer Trieschman set up the play with a nice centering feed to Farkas and her reverse shot went into the far side for her eighth of the season.
Columbia then pulled goalkeeper Alexa Conomikes for an extra attacker, but Harvard was able to limit the Lions' chances and come away with the win.
Conomikes made four stops on the day and Farkas led all players with four shots.
The game, originally scheduled for Friday, November 8, was moved to Saturday morning due to icy field conditions at the Baker Athletics Complex. Columbia honored seniors Maaike Blindenbach, Kelly McCarthy, Trieshman and Emma Wiklund last night prior to the contest being postponed.
