Daniel Igobokwe (Men's Triple Jump), Katie Wasserman (Women's One Mile), Sam Ritz (Men's One Mile), Alek Sauer (Men's 1,000-Meter Run), Erin Gregoire (Women's 3,000-Meter Run), Men's DMR and Men's 4x800-Meter Relay capture Ivy League titles.
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Five Columbia individuals and two distance relay teams—Daniel Igbokwe (men's triple jump), Sam Ritz (men's one mile), Katie Wasserman (women's one mile), Alek Sauer (men's 1,000-meter run), Erin Gregoire (women's 3,000-meter run), the men's distance medley relay, and men's 4x800 meter relay teams—all captured Ivy League championship titles at the 2019 Indoor Heptagonal Championships held this weekend at Harvard's Albert A. Gordon Indoor Track.
The five individual titles all proved to be highlights for the Lions. Columbia started off the day by winning back-to-back mile performances. A favorite going in, Wasserman ran away with the women's mile title in 4:43.93, taking the Gold by five strides. Then Ritz followed it up with a masterful performance that saw him get passed by two runners, lose the inside lane, then burst to the outside and ride a strong kick to victory. He won the race in 4:06.70.
Later in the day, Sauer showed tremendous versatility and strength after he captured the 1,000-meter run title and set an Ivy League meet record with a 2:21.96 time. He won his third consecutive indoor individual title as he captured the 800-meter run last year.
As he's done all year, Igbokwe captured the triple jump title with an overwhelming 15.82m/51-11 jump. With every attempt, he seems to set his own school record.
Then it was time for Columbia's strong distance relays. Columbia swept both the DMR and 4x800-meter relays in back-to-back prevailing performances. Sam Ritz took home the DMR title as Solomon Rice, Willie Hall and Brodie Holmes combined for a 9:57.25. Then the 4x800-meter relay team consisting of Solomon Fountain, Jackson Storey, Alek Sauer and Josiah Langstaff outpaced the field with a 7:35.85 time. On the third leg, Sauer gave the Lions the lead and Langstaff brought it home.
On Saturday, Gregoire burst away from the pack and won the 3,000-meter women's title by three full seconds in front of her closest competitor. She finished with a 9:25.65 dominating time.
Other Columbia women's scorers on Sunday included Allie Hays, who took second place in the 5,000-meter run (16:29.77), the DMR team, which finished in second place in 11:39:47, Terri Turner, who placed third in the 500-meter run (1.12.81), Kali Hatcher (3rd place, 12.57m/41-3) and Maryam Hassan (5th place, 12.41m/40-8 ¾) in the triple jump and Annie Fanta placed fifth in the One Mile (4:48.60).
Additional men's scorers were Brian Zabilski (14:27.57) and Tyler Italiano (14:27.80), who finished second and third respectively in the 5,000-meter run and Josiah Langstaff, who placed third in the 800-meter run (1:51.11).
Additional Lions scorers on Saturday included Jack Philkar, who finished fourth and earned four points in the men's weight throw with a 18.61 meter throw, Robert O'Brien, who finished sixth in the men's pole vault at 4.95 meters and earned one point, and Allie Hays, who took sixth in the 3,000-meter run with a 9:35.71 time for one point.
Columbia finished fourth in the men's team competition with 83 points and seventh in the women's standings with 55 points.

All-Ivy awards are based on the results of the championships, with first-place (including relays) earning first-team All-Ivy and second-place (including relays) earning second-team All-Ivy. On Sunday, the league's eight coaches will vote on Most Outstanding Performers for both the women and men and Coach of the Year awards.
