NEW YORK – The Columbia lightweight rowing team makes a short trip to the Schuykill River to meet up with Penn and Yale for the Dodge Cup Saturday, April 13. Racing is slated to begin at 9 a.m. The Lions are ranked No. 6 in the latest IRA/USRowing Coaches Poll, while Yale is rated No. 5 and Penn checks in at No. 3.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Marcellus Hartley Dodge Cup was established in 1955 and is raced annually between Columbia, Yale, and Penn. Yale has the most wins with 39, followed by the Quakers with 15 total victories. The Lions won the trophy last season and have just three wins since 2003.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions split a pair of races last weekend, topping Navy Saturday for the WIT Cup, before dropping the Wales-Kirrane Cup regatta to Harvard Sunday at Overpeck Park. The Columbia second varsity eight posted victories, extending its winning streak to 13-straight dating back to the 2017 spring season.
MELVIN, ZIONTS EARN USROWING U23 INVITES
Senior coxswain Bella Zionts and junior Sam Melvin were selected to compete at the USRowing U23 Camps this summer. The camp will select the lightweight men's quadruple sculls crew that will race in Sarasota-Bradenton and will explore possible combinations in the lightweight double sculls, lightweight pair and lightweight single sculls to race at the 2019 USRowing Under 23 World Championships Trials.
PENN'S STATUS
Penn won the second varsity eight race and took second in the varsity eight, competing against Cornell and Harvard with the Matthews Trophy and the Leonard Cup on the line last Saturday.
YALE'S STATUS
The Bulldogs won wire-to-wire in all three races last weekend against Georgetown in their home debut on the Housatonic.
A LOOK BACK…
In 2018, Yale's varsity eight came out of the gates with a two-seat lead 500 meters in, but Columbia made its move at the 750-meter mark and gained the lead for good at the halfway point of the race. The Lions then shifted into their final gear and wound up taking down the Bulldogs with about a boat length of open water.

Columbia takes on Cornell in Ithaca for the Geiger Cup on Saturday, April 20.
