The Lions race twice on Saturday, opening up at home against Penn and Princeton at Overpeck before meeting up with the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway
NEW YORK – The Columbia heavyweight rowing team makes its home debut Saturday morning when they welcome Penn and Princeton for the Childs Cup Saturday, April 13, before heading down the New Jersey Turnpike to race Rutgers for the Collins Cup regatta. Racing begins at Overpeck Park at 9 a.m. and the third varsity eight is set to launch kick things off on the Raritan at 3:20 p.m.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Childs Cup was first awarded in 1879 and Saturday will mark the 107th time the Lions, Tigers and Quakers will vie for the trophy. Princeton is riding a nine-race winning streak and has been victorious 51 times overall. Penn has hoisted the Cup 44 times, but not since 1993. Columbia's last win came in 2009 on Lake Carnegie and have captured the hardware 12 times previously.
The Collins Cup series began in 2001 with the Lions winning the inaugural race. Columbia has won the last 14 straight years against the Scarlet Knights, and have a 15-3 record overall since the debut of the trophy. The cup was a gift of Kevin and Helen Collins, both of whom are Rutgers graduates. Kevin Collins also has a graduate degree from Columbia.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions placed second to Dartmouth last weekend, but topped MIT in a quad-regatta to retain the Alumni Cup. Columbia checks in at No. 16 in the first IRA/USRowing Coaches Poll of the year.
PRINCETON'S STATUS
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 2-0 record following wins over both Georgetown and Navy. Princeton took the No. 7 slot in the inaugural IRA/USRowing Coaches poll on Wednesday.
PENN'S STATUS
The Quakers fell against Northeastern for the Burk Cup last Saturday. Northeastern built and early lead and built on it throughout the race to take the trophy for the third consecutive season.
RUTGERS' STATUS
The Scarlet Knights have taken part in three scrimmages before taking part in three regular season regattas before the EARC Sprints in May.
A LOOK BACK… CHILDS CUP
Columbia fell to Princeton and Penn in a trio of races on Lake. The Tigers surged in the second 500 meters and came away with an open-water victory. The Quakers and Lions jockeyed back-and-forth with second place. Penn pulled away at the halfway point and held off a late push from Columbia to earn runner-up honors.
A LOOK BACK… COLLINS CUP
Columbia earned an open-water victory over Rutgers in the varsity eight race to retain the Collins Cup for the 14th consecutive year in the season opener for both teams at Overpeck Park last spring.

The Lions remain on the road next week when they face Yale and Princeton for the Blackwell Cup on Saturday, April 20.
