Lions Extend Collins Cup Streak to 15, Split Pair of Races Saturday
4/14/2019 11:02:00 AM | Heavyweight Rowing
The Lions fell to Penn, Princeton in the morning at Overpeck before taking down Rutgers by open-water.
LEONIA & PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Columbia heavyweight rowing team split a pair of races Saturday, falling to Princeton and Penn for the Childs Cup in the morning and topping Rutgers for the Collins later in the day.
After heavy rains on Friday, the Lions had flat conditions in the morning, but faced changing winds on the Raritan River.
"Our guys wanted to their start in the afternoon race at Rutgers, and they did," head coach and director of rowing Scott Alwin said. "They also prioritized staying aggressive in the third 500 meters when they knew they would be tired and they would hit some headwind. They maintained speed despite the headwind. This race day was good preparation for when we race twice at Eastern Sprints and possibly day one of IRA's"
In the Childs Cup, Columbia suffered a slow start which proved to be the difference in finishing behind Penn for second and keeping the pace with Princeton. The Lions responded in the afternoon against Rutgers with a stronger push out of the gates and a burst in the third 500 meters to claim a 15-second victory to retain the Collins Cup for the 15th consecutive season.
The Lions second varsity eight turned a second-place showing in the morning and took down the Scarlet Knights by 10 seconds in the afternoon. The third varsity eight claimed a convincing win over
Rutgers and pulled in third place in the Childs Cup races.
The Lions remain on the road next week when they face Yale and Princeton for the Blackwell Cup on Saturday, April 20.
