Columbia Battles Northeastern for the Woodbury Cup Saturday
4/12/2019 10:46:00 AM | Women's Rowing
Lions hope to reclaim the cup for the first time since 2014
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's rowing team battles Northeastern for the Woodbury Cup on Saturday at the Charles River in Boston.
Racing begins at 7 a.m. with competition in the varsity four. The second varsity eight will take the water at 7:36 before the battle for the Woodbury Cup takes place at 8:12 a.m. Columbia and Northeastern will also hold races between their second varsity four and third varsity eight crews.
The Huskies lead the all-time series, 18-9, including an 8-6 mark in the cup race. Columbia had the upper hand with four cup wins in five years from 2010 to 2014, but Northeastern broke through with victories in three straight cup races. The Lions currently hold the cup, winning it last season at Eastern Sprints. While the Huskies and Lions have competed for more than two decades, they started racing for the Woodbury Cup in 2005. The Woodbury Cup is named in memory of former Columbia rower and team captain Melanie Woodbury, a 1996 graduate of Barnard College, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 2002.
"Northeastern and Columbia have a great history of competitive racing," second-year head coach Emerson Curry said. "The Woodbury Cup, named for Melanie Woodbury, has been hotly contested over the years. This year looks to be the same as both crews have been competitive in early-season season results.
"High winds have put racing in jeopardy for the weekend but we are preparing for challenging conditions and a continually adapting schedule."
Any updates to this weekend's racing schedule will be posted to GoColumbiaLions.com.
The Lions will send senior coxswain Christy Abraham, junior Sabina Maurer, first-year Hayley Willner, junior Liza Ray, senior Maya Hartleben, sophomore Honor Clements, junior Anna Beshlian, first-year India Colegrave and junior Astrid Walker-Stewart into the varsity boat for the cup race. The crew also competed together at this season's Doc Hosea and Ivy League Invitationals.
Columbia is coming off an encouraging performance against Ivy League competition last weekend at Lake Carnegie. The Lions defeated Cornell in all races in the morning session before taking on Penn and Yale in the afternoon. The varsity crew were clipped by Penn by just one second. The second varsity defeated the Quakers by four seconds.
