No. 16 Columbia fell to No. 1 Yale, but drew closer to No. 11 Penn Saturday
PHILADELPHIA – The No. 1 Yale came up victorious over the No. 16 Columbia heavyweight rowing team and No. 11 Penn Saturday morning on the Schuykill River. All three teams faced very challenging conditions which included headwinds of 11-15 MPH and bumpy water.
The Lions' varsity eight nearly took second place, but the Quakers eked in just 0.4 seconds in front of Columbia. In the second varsity eight, the Lions topped Penn for the second consecutive weekend. More impressively, the Lions were without senior captain and varsity eight stroke Alex Hedge and junior John Tanguay, due to a mandatory class requirement.
"Our two eights showed a lot of competitive maturity today," said Columbia's Director of Rowing and Heavyweight Head Coach Scott Alwin. "Racing in reorganized lineups, our crews raced Penn very tough. It was enough to stay ahead of them in the second varsity and nearly enough to get them in the varsity eight. We closed the gap by about seven seats since last Saturday but Penn was good enough to stay ahead of us today. Everyone in our top crew, and especially Sean Aral, who was promoted for the week, did a great job."
Columbia and Penn also competed in a varsity four competition with the Quakers coming away with an 18-second victory.
"Yale showed why they are the top ranked crew in the country," Alwin continued. "They had the horsepower to push through the headwind and chop to control the race in both the top two eights. We are looking forward to getting back into our normal lineups and preparing to race Syracuse and BU at home next weekend."
The Lions return to Overpeck Park next Saturday, April 27, to host the Doc Lusins Trophy regatta against Boston University and Syracuse.
