
Lions Face No. 1 Yale, No. 11 Penn for Blackwell Cup Saturday

Columbia meets up with the top-ranked Bulldogs and takes on the Quakers for the second consecutive week.
NEW YORK – The No. 16 Columbia heavyweight rowing team will race on the Schuykill River to face off against No. 1 Yale and No. 11 Penn for the Blackwell Cup this Saturday in Philadelphia. This will be the second consecutive weekend the Lions and Quakers will meet after competing for the Childs Cup at Overpeck Park last Saturday.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Blackwell Cup is awarded in honor of George Engs Blackwell, an 1880 graduate of Columbia. The cup has been contested between Columbia, Penn, and Yale since 1927, with Yale tallying the most wins overall with 45 total victories. The Lions last won the race in 2009.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions took third Saturday against Penn and Princeton, but bounced back with a win over Rutgers for the Collins Cup during an afternoon race in Piscataway.
PENN'S STATUS
The Quakers finished between the Tigers and Lions in the varsity eight in the Childs Cup regatta. In the second varsity took third place.
YALE'S STATUS
The Bulldogs, who secured all 11 first-place votes in the latest IRA/USRowing Coaches Poll, had all six boats finish ahead of Dartmouth to retain the Olympic Axe for the 15th consecutive season. All of Yale's boats remain undefeated this spring.
A LOOK BACK…
Columbia finished second to Yale in the Blackwell Cup varsity eight race, but was able to make up ground on Penn to avenge a loss to the Quakers the previous weekend. The Bulldogs swept all three events at the regatta.
NEXT UP
The Lions return to Overpeck Park next Saturday, April 27, to host the Doc Lusins Trophy regatta against Boston University and Syracuse.
