No. 3 Columbia Gets Crack at Three Ranked Foes, Including No. 1 Cornell

The Lions race twice, once in Ithaca for the Geiger Cup and back home for the Subin Cup, on Easter weekend
NEW YORK – The Columbia lightweight rowing team will race on back-to-back days this Easter weekend, traveling to Ithaca to face top-ranked Cornell and No. 12 MIT Saturday before making its debut at Overpeck Park against No. 8 Dartmouth Sunday.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
GEIGER CUP
The Geiger Cup began in 1956 in honor of MIT's first athletic director Andy Geiger, and is awarded to the winner of the Varsity Eight race between Cornell, Columbia, and MIT. Cornell has come away with the cup in 12 of the last 16 seasons.
SUBIN CUP
The Subin Cup began in 1987 in honor of D. William Subin, Dartmouth '63 and Columbia Law '66. Subin coxed on the heavyweight at Dartmouth and later went on to coach the lightweights at Columbia while enrolled in the law school.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions moved up three spots in the latest IRA/USRowing Polls after topping Yale and Penn for the Dodge Cup last weekend. Columbia turned in a time of 5:44.59, which was nearly four seconds faster than the second-place Quakers. Yale claimed third in the main event.
CORNELL'S STATUS
Cornell made a statement season statement win over No. 2 Princeton, taking three of four races, to earn the Platt Cup and the Harriott Trophy. The Big Red's varsity eight came away with a three-second victory over the Tigers.
MIT'S STATUS
Competing in the two-day Knecht Cup, the MIT men's lightweight crew team won the Pairs, Varsity 8+, and Light 4+ events while all eight of its entries advanced to either the final or Grand Final of their respective races.
DARTMOUTH'S STATUS
Dartmouth hosted its lone home race of the 2019 season for the Biglin Bowl against Harvard. The Big Green finished second in the varsity eight, while the second varsity eight came in second of three boats, edging out Harvard's third varsity.
A LOOK BACK… GEIGER CUP
Facing strong headwinds of 8-10 MPH, Columbia turned in a time of 6:17.153, which was just over five seconds in front of the Big Red.
A LOOK BACK…SUBIN CUP
In the varsity eight, Columbia took advantage of the ideal conditions in Hanover and turned in a time of 5:33.02, over 13 seconds faster than the Big Green. All three Lion boats claimed victory on the day.
NEXT UP
Columbia will take next weekend off before one last regular season tune-up against Drexel and Delaware at Overpeck Park Saturday, May 4.
