NEW YORK – The No. 15 Columbia heavyweight rowing team will compete one final time at Overpeck Park when Boston University and Syracuse visit to compete for the Doc Lusins Trophy Saturday morning. The Terriers (No. 8) and Orange (No. 9) are both rated in the top-10 of the latest IRA/USRowing Coaches Poll.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Doc Lusins Trophy is named in honor of Columbia's 1959 captain John "Doc" Lusins and is contested between Boston University and Columbia. The trophy features a unique bow ball design and was established in 2003 by John's son Michael Lusins, who rowed for Boston University and graduated in 1998. The Terriers have won the cup the last eight years.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions were missing varsity stroke
Alex Hedge last weekend due to a mandatory class requirement, but nearly took second place last weekend over Penn. Ultimately, the Quakers eked out a 0.4 decision over Columbia with No. 1 Yale took first in the varsity eight. All three crews faced strong headwinds and choppy waters on the Schuykill River. Hedge returns to the lineup this Saturday.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY'S STATUS
The Terriers topped Dartmouth for the Bill Cup, winning the trophy for the first time since 2016. BU won three of four races on the Charles River.
SYRACUSE'S STATUS
The Orange edged Navy by one second for the Goes Trophy and took the Stagg Trophy for compiling the most points between Cornell and Navy.
A LOOK BACK…
Competing in choppy waters and a strong headwind on the Charles River, all three crews were in the mix until the final 300 meters when the Terriers and Orange pulled away. In the end, Boston University edged out Syracuse by 0.5 seconds with the Lions losing ground in the final stretch.
