Lions defeat Cornell in the morning, go down to the wire with Penn
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Columbia women's rowing team competed at the Ivy League Invitational on Sunday, where the Lions earned victories over Cornell and impressed against Yale and Penn. The second annual regatta was held at Lake Carnegie.
Columbia defeated Cornell in all of the morning heats, winning by a three-second margin in the varsity eight, just under six seconds in the second varsity and also besting the Big Red in the varsity fours. The closest heat of the day came in the afternoon, where the varsity eight went bow ball to bow ball with Penn throughout the entire course before the Quakers edged out the duel. Yale pulled away after the first 1,000 meters to win the three-boat heat.
"The most positive thing about the weekend was seeing our crews put two good races together," second-year head coach Emerson Curry stated. "In the past, we've struggled to be able to do that twice in one day, so it was really encouraging to see. The varsity race with Penn was one of the tightest races of the day. I think we can feel good about the improvement we've made to this point."
Columbia's varsity eight broke out to an early lead over the first 400 meters in the head-to-head race against Cornell. The Lions maintained their margin throughout and held off one final push by Cornell over the last 500 meters to win comfortably with a time of 6:40.3. The second varsity put distance between themselves and the Big Red after the first 300 meters and controlled the race on their way to an open-water victory. The varsity and second varsity four bested their respective counterparts from Cornell comfortably to wrap up the morning session.
After a midday break, the Lions were back in the water to take on Penn and Yale. The varsity eight put together the most exciting race of the day against Penn. The two crews were neck-and-neck from the start, exchanging leads with every stroke as the race entered the final 200 meters. Penn clipped the Lions down the stretch with a time of 6:23.6 to Columbia's 6:24.7. Ninth-ranked Yale clocked in at 6:14.1
The second varsity kept Yale within striking distance for the first 1,000 meters of their heat before the Bulldogs ran away. Columbia held about a three-quarters length lead on Penn at the halfway point and created separation to defeat the Quakers with a time of 6:34.7.
Columbia takes on Northeastern this Saturday on the Charles River in Boston for the Woodbury Cup. The Lions will also go head-to-head against Brown.
