Columbia's Four Qualifiers, Head To NCAA Track And Field National Championships

Sauer, Hays, Zabilski and Igbokwe all head to Austin, Texas, starting on June 5, for the National Championships.
NEW YORK — Four Columbia Track and Field student-athletes, Alek Sauer, Daniel Igbokwe, Brian Zabilski and Allie Hays, having set qualifying marks at the NCAA Track and Field Eastern Region Preliminaries, now turn their sights on the NCAA Track and Field Division I National Championships, which are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, June 5 and run through until Saturday, June 8 in Austin, Texas at the hosting University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.

HOW THEY GOT HERE: In order to reach the championships, the four Columbia student-athletes had to finish in the top 12 in each of their respective events at the NCAA East Region Prelims in order to move onto the championships. Sauer, Ibgokwe, Zabilski and Hays all reach those marks, and now have a chance at competing against the best in the country.
Sauer's path along the 800-meter run, began with him winning the first-round race with a time of 1:49.03 before finishing sixth in the quarterfinals with a time of 1:49.58 to move into the championship rounds. For Ibgokwe, he put together an 11th place finish in the triple jump, setting a mark of 15.65m, to finish among the best in the region and he now moves into the mix of the best in the country.
In the 5,000-meter run, both Zabilski and Hays set the standard for Columbia in that event. Zabilski, went out and won his heat, finishing 12th overall with a time of 14:14.96, while Hays raced to a time of 16:19.18 to finish 10th overall, giving Columbia two student-athletes poised to represent the Lions among the best in the nation.
