5 THINGS TO KNOW
1. HISTORICAL RUN OF GOALS
Columbia has scored a goal in each of its last 14 matches dating back to last season, which is its longest stretch of contests with a goal in over a quarter-century. The 14-match streak surpassed the 1994 team that scored in 13 straight games and is the longest since the Lions ran a 15-match goal streak in 1993. Prior to that, Columbia put together 18-match streaks between both 1980-81 and 1986-87. The program record for consecutive matches with a goal is 24, spanning every match of the 1979 Final Four season and the first five matches of 1980.
2. ZEITZ MAKES @NCAASOCCER TOP PLAYS
First-year midfielder Uri Zeitz was featured in @NCAASoccer's Top Plays of the Week with his goal on Friday at UConn. Zeitz roped in a shot from a few yards outside the penalty area, striking a screamer over the UConn keeper and into the roof to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage. The goal came on Zeitz's seventh shot attempt of his career, five of which have come on goal. Zetiz's goal was featured alongside top plays from Lafayette, UNC, Drake and Southern Methodist.
3. DENIS IN FORM
John Denis enters Friday's matchup ranking among the top 10 in the Ivy League in four different categories. The senior has scored a team-best three goals on the year, ranking sixth among league competitors, while also sitting third in shots (17), sixth in shots on goal (7) and fourth in points (8). A native of nearby Yorktown Heights, Denis scored two goals in last Friday's 3-2 win at UConn, while also assisting Columbia's third goal. Denis scored the game-winner in the 84th minute to head the Lions to their first victory of the season and took part in five straight Columbia goals over a three-game stretch. His three goals this season have already bested his two scores from a year ago. He is halfway to his career-high of six scores as a sophomore in 2017.
4. LARA-NET-TWO
Danny Laranetto put away his second goal of the season on Monday, leveling the score 1-1 with a strike in the 36th minute against LIU. Uri Zeitz made his way into the far side of the penalty area but had his run stopped from a tackle by an LIU defender. The deflection came through the area to Laranetto, who acted quickly and decisively, continuing his move forward and blasting a shot by the LIU keeper to equalize. Laranetto's two goals this season match his total from last year and give the Washington, Connecticut native four for his career.
5. THE SERIES
Columbia and Monmouth will hold their eighth all-time series meeting on Friday. The Lions have defeated the Hawks each of the last three years, winning all three of those contests by one goal apiece. In fact, since the start of the series in 2008, six of the seven matchups between the two sides have been decided by a single goal. Last season, Dylan Mott put away the only tally of the match, scoring in the 11th minute as the Lions hung on to win in West Long Branch, 1-0.
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
Monmouth took its first positive result of the year last Saturday in a scoreless draw on the road at Binghamton. The Hawks had been dealt five straight defeats leading up to that match and have been outscored 11-3 this season, which includes getting shut out four times. Two of those five losses have come against Ivy League competition, falling to Penn on Sept. 6, 2-0, and to Princeton last Wednesday, 1-0. Sebastian Rodriguez has two of Monmouth's three goals and has taken a team-high eight shots. Pablo Fonseca has the only other tally, which came at Lafayette.
