Lions Set For A Pair Of Weekend Meets In First Competition Of The New Decade

Columbia Track & Field will head to the Gotham Cup (Jan. 17) and the Dartmouth-Yale-Columbia (Jan. 18) tri-meet to open the new decade.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y./HANOVER, N.H. – For the first time in the new decade, Columbia Track & Field is set to compete and will open the 2020s indoors with a group of Lions heading to the Gotham Cup, on Friday, Jan. 17 (2 p.m.) at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York, while another, larger group, heads north to Hanover, New Hampshire to take part in the Dartmouth-Yale-Columbia tri-meet set to get going at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18.

WELCOMING THE NEW DECADE: Columbia last competed at the Metro Season Opener (Dec. 6, 2019) and the TCNJ Winter Open (Dec. 7, 2019), making the Gotham Cup the first time a Lion will compete in the new decade. Both meets that the Lions were in back in the beginning of December were within the city limits, with the Metro Season Opener being hosted by the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, and the TCNJ Winter Open taking place at The Armory, making the trip north to Hanover, Columbia's first competition of the 2019-20 season outside of the city.

SPLITING THE LIONS: With both meets happening on the weekend, Columbia will split itself and send a handful of student-athletes to each meet. At the Gotham Cup, the Lions will send 11 men and five women across a handful of events, while at the D-Y-C tri-meet, the Lions will be represented by 37 women and 28 men across a both track and field events. The D-Y-C tri-meet will also be the first time this season the Columbia will face exclusively only Ivy League competition, allowing the Lions to get a feel as to where they stand ahead of the Ivy League Indoor Track & Field Heps, set to go on from Feb. 29 to Mar. 1.
