Hatcher Leaps To TJ Victory In Final Day Of The Dr. Sander Invite
1/25/2020 6:56:00 PM | Track and Field
Kali Hatcher's mark of 12.97m is the 14th-best mark in the country.
NEW YORK – With a leap that flew past her personal record, sophomore Kali Hatcher won the triple jump with the 14th-best mark (12.97m) in the country as Columbia Track & Field wrapped up a strong weekend at the Dr. Sander Invitational Columbia Challenge on Saturday, Jan. 25 at The Armory.
Hatcher's win was the best finish on the day, and overall Columbia racked up eight top 10 finishes on the day, and 14 top 10 finishes over the three days of competition.
"Over the weekend I thought our team had some great performances, highlighted by our two triple jump winners, Daniel Igbokwe and Kali Hatcher, and it was great to see Jack [Pihlkar] finish third, just barely missing his own PR in the process. On the track we had some good runs, highlighted by Allie [Hays] running strong in the 3,000-Meter Run and Aaron Breene ran well in the One-Mile.
"Across the team, we competed well, and our first years competed well, considering this was our first big meet of the season. There is still work to be done, but I am confident that we are focused and ready to get the work done and get to where we need and want to be."
HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN'S EVENTS): A statement was made in the triple jump by Hatcher, who in her final jump blasted past her previous PR of 42-1.50/12.84m by leaping 42-6.75/12.97m to take first in the event and the mark sent ripples across the country and the Ivy League. Hatcher's jump is the 14th-best mark set in the country so far this season and it is easily the best mark set in the Ivy League through the first two months of the 2019-20 season.
Hatcher was not alone in a solid triple jump performance, as senior Maryam Hassan tied her indoor PR mark, finishing fourth with a leap of 40-1.50/12.23m to give Columbia three top five finishes in the triple jump between the men and the women across the three days of competition. In the high jump, Columbia first-year Anna Jordahl-Henry powered her way to a sixth-place finish, clearing 5-7.00/1.70m, while right behind her junior Grace Campbell cleared 5-5.00/1.65m to finish tied for seventh to give the Lions two top 10 finishes in the high jump.
On the track, junior Allie Hays ran one of the best 3,000m times in program history, finishing fourth overall with a PR time of 9:21.82 to give the Lions their best finish in the running events.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN'S EVENTS): Already off to a strong start, having tossed a PR (61-10.25/18.85m) at the Dartmouth-Yale-Columbia tri-meet (Jan. 18), junior Jack Pihlkar barely missed surpassing that PR with a strong third-place finishing mark of 61-9.50/18.83m in the weight throw. Pihlkar's mark bested Brown's Michael Coppolino, who finished fourth and to this date is the only student-athlete from the Ivy League to have a better mark then Pihlkar this season.
In the pole vault, sophomore Tiber Seireeni tied his PR of 15-9.00/4.80m, clearing that same height to finish 10th overall. Columbia collected another top 10 finish from junior Jackson Storey, who cruised past his PR in the 800-Meter Dash clocking a time of 1:52.54 to finish eighth overall.
