NEW YORK—The Columbia Women's Tennis squad won its fifth match in a row as it cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory over Fairfield Wednesday afternoon at Dick Savitt Tennis Center. With the win, Columbia improves to 7-2 overall, while Fairfield, which captured the 2019 MAAC championship and advanced to the 2019 NCAA Tournament, drops to 2-4 on the year.

The dual match shutout marked Columbia's third of the year.

Columbia took a quick 1-0 lead as it claimed the doubles point in 30 minutes. Columbia's No. 2 doubles team of junior Jennifer Kerr and first-year Shivani Amineni made quick work of Fairfield's Francessa Karman and Aina March 6-1. Junior Paulina Ferrari and first-year Michelle Xu followed with a dominant 6-0 win over Fairfield's Laina Campos and Emily Lombardi at No. 3 doubles to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

That set the stage for singles as the Lions kept the momentum by winning the first set in all six singles matches. The first five matches all finished within a 10-minute span as the Lions went up 6-0. Xu won a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles over Fairfield's Anna Komer, Sakar followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Fairfield's Diano Prinos. Amineni clinched the victory for Columbia with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Fairfield's Aina March.

Junior Sarah Rahman claimed a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles over Fairfield's Francessa Karman and first-year Julia Haynes maintained the shutout with a 6-1, 6-0 No. 4 singles victory over Sophia Prinos for a 6-0 Columbia advantage.

Sophomore Caitie Sullivan sealed the Columbia shutout with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Fairfield's Jessica Pil at No. 5 singles.

The match marked Columbia's third of the week. Columbia is back in action on Friday when it travels to Syracuse for a 3 p.m. match, then hosts Washington State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
