CHULA VISTA, Calif. — A two-time All-American and member of Columbia's 2017 National Outdoor Collegiate Championship recurve team, Aileen Yu '19CC was recently selected to USA Archery's Resident Athlete Program, located at the Easton Archery Center of Excellence in Chula Vista, California, in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Resident Athlete Program provides athletes the opportunity to dedicate themselves and train full time.
"It's been pretty crazy," said Yu. "I've definitely learned about discipline and hard work. It's opened my eyes because you see all these athletes are working just as hard to achieve these goals, so it's definitely been a blessing but it's also super hard."
As a senior in 2019, Yu helped the Lions to a runner-up national team finish at the National Outdoor Collegiate Championships, en route to All-America honors. Her highest individual national finish came in 2017, earning a bronze medal at the outdoor championships.
"Because of Columbia I was able to continue archery from high school being on the varsity team, so that's definitely given me a plus because I've been competing and being in that mindset," added Yu. "That's definitely helped."
Yu, who is one of six female archery residents at the Easton Center, trains under the guidance of the USA Archery national coaching staff. The resident athletes are provided year-round accommodations and access to sport performance services including sports psychology, nutrition, strength and conditioning, sports medicine and a host of other athlete services. In addition, USA Archery funds some of the cost for the athletes to attend United States Archery Team Series events..
