Columbia Volleyball fell in straight sets to the Yale Bulldogs in a Saturday night Ivy League matchup.
NEW YORK — Columbia Volleyball (5-15, 2-8 IVY) dropped an Ivy League match against Yale (14-5, 7-3 IVY) in straight sets on Saturday night on Schiller Court at Levien Gym.
Noelle Foster again led the Lions in kills, finishing with nine, while Shari Stenglein added 19 assists and Vanessa Pan collected 13 digs. On the block, Columbia was led by four blocks from Isa Lamus and Foster and Foster's 11.5 total points was a Columbia team high.
The Lions did out-block the Bulldogs, collecting eight blocks to Yale's four and they did hold Yale to .193 hitting on the defensive end. But six total ball handling errors and 12 service aces from Yale put Columbia in a tough spot all match, which led to the straight set defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The first two sets finished with identical scores, as Yale took both sets 25-17. In both sets, the score was tied at 13-13 before the Bulldogs pulled ahead down the stretch to win both sets and take a 2-0 lead into the third set. Foster collected seven of her nine kills over the first two sets, and five of Columbia's eight blocks came during the opening sets, but the Lions faced a large mountain to overcome heading into the third set.
Much like the first two sets, the Bulldogs held a lead and began to look like they might pull away midway through the action. But with the Lions trailing 18-13, Mckenzy Metter served Columbia back into the set, scoring an ace ad getting a kill from Foster.
A timeout from Yale came at 18-15 after the Columbia stretch. Yale would take another timeout after kills from Anna Gioranidi and an attack error from Yale's Mila Yarich got the Lions within two points at 22-20, but unfortunately for the Lions, Yale's timeout would calm the Bulldogs down. And the next three points would go Yale's way and it finished off their 25-20 third set win and the 3-0 win overall in the match.
