Brown Sneaks By Columbia, 1-0
10/9/2021 1:26:00 PM | Field Hockey
The Lions held a 12-3 edge in shots, but could not break through against the Bears.
NEW YORK — Brown's Danielle van Rootselaar scored the lone goal to give the Bears a 1-0 victory over the Columbia field hockey team Saturday morning. The Lions were shut out for the third consecutive game and dropped to 6-4 overall and 0-3 in Ivy League play.
Columbia had the better of the play for the most part, outshooting Brown (6-5, 2-1), 12-3, and held a 6-3 advantage on corners. Bears netminder Jodi Brine turned away six shots to earn the clean sheet.
The Lions drew their first corner 45 seconds into the game and generated a pair of early attempts, one that was blocked and a rebound that was denied by Brine's blocker to keep things scoreless. Despite controlling possession for much of the quarter an opportunistic van Rootselaar received a pass down the middle and picked up steam heading into the circle. Her shot from the right beat Alexa Conomikes to the far side for her ninth tally of the year.
In the second, Columbia was denied on another corner chance after Brine made a sliding stop on a Brooke Gasser attempt and Anabelle Brodeur was not able to scoop in a rebound attempt from close range as the Bears took the lead into the half.
The third quarter was much of the same, but in the fourth, Brown played its best 15 minutes of the match and forced Conomikes to make her only save of the game. With just under five minutes to play, Columbia played with an empty net and Emily Maclean kept the Lions within striking distance after stopping a shot off a corner. However, the Bears held the Lions without a shot on goal, even with the extra attacker, to pick up their third consecutive win.
Columbia is back at home to face Yale on Friday, October 15 at 6 p.m. at the Baker Athletic Complex. All fans ages 12 and over in attendance must be vaccinated and are required to wear a mask. For Columbia's complete venue policies, please click here. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN+.
