Here are five things to know heading into Sunday's matchup.
#1 | UPWARD MOMENTUM
Columbia will enter Sunday's game with the momentum of two victories. After snagging the season's first win, 1-0, last Sunday over Bucknell, the Lions took down La Salle on the road with a thrilling 2-1 double overtime finish. Despite allowing La Salle to strike early, Columbia countered in the 82nd minute with a goal from
Sophia Cavaliere that was assisted by
Sam Cohn. After holding steady at 1-1 through regulation,
Madi Pilla broke through in the 103rd minute with the golden goal, assisted by
Claire Pinnie.
#2 | SOPHOMORE SURGE
Undeterred by the loss of their first season, Columbia's sophomores have shone on the pitch. In addition to her heroics at La Salle, Pilla found the back of the net and dished out an assist in Columbia's opening matchup against St. John's. Pilla and classmate
Nata Ramirez each boast a team-leading five points off two goals and one assist.
#3 | HISTORY REPEATS
Columbia's victory on Sunday will mark the fourth consecutive season that the Lions have won three of their first six games. This opening surge has led to winning seasons in the last four years.
#4 | DEPTH CHART
The Lions have demonstrated exceptional roster depth, especially in goal. All three of the program's goalkeepers have seen time in the first five games. Sophomore
Paige Nurkin has started three games while first-year
Audrey Byrne has been a part of the starting eleven twice.
#5 | THE OPPONENT
Columbia and Fairleigh Dickinson have not faced off since September, 27, 2015. Off to a strong start, FDU has not dropped a home game this season. Following a tough season-opening 6-0 loss to No. 25 Rutgers and a heartbreaking 2-0 defeat at Syracuse, the Knights have avoided dropping another. The Teaneck team earned 0-0 draws against Saint Joseph's and Loyola Maryland while claiming a pair of 1-0 victories against Seton Hall and Stony Brook. Important to note, the Knights have had a difficult time finishing in regulation with four contests going into double overtime, including the last three.
