Lions Defeat Colorado 4-1 in ITA Kick-Off

Columbia improves to 3-1 on the year with Consolation Win over Colorado; Anna Zhang, Michelle Xu, and Clarine Lerby each win singles matches in victory.
MALIBU, Calif.—The Columbia women's tennis team won three straight singles matches to claim a 4-1 ITA Kick-Off Consolation victory over Colorado Sunday at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
With the victory, Columbia won on the second day of an ITA Kick-Off event for the first time since January 26, 2014 when it swept Tulane 4-0. The Lions also improve to 3-1 on the season.
Columbia started off the day by taking the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Akanksha Bhan and Anna Zhang shut out Colorado's No. 1 doubles team of Antonia Balzert and Caroline Pozo 6-0, then Rachele Rimondini and Melissa Sakar followed with a 6-2 win over Colorado's No. 2 doubles team of Megan Forster and Mia Stanojevic for a 1-0 advantage.
Colorado (0-2) tied the score at 1-1 when Stanojevic took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Columbia's Rimondini at No. 4 singles. But the Lions won three consecutive matches for the victory. Zhang defeated Forster 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Michelle Xu gave the Lions a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Ellen Puzak at No. 6 singles. Then Clarine Lerby clinched the victory with a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over Colorado's Betina Tokac at No. 5 singles.
Columbia competed in the prestigious ITA Kick-Off Weekend event for the second consecutive season.
Columbia (3-1) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Florida International. First serve is at 1 p.m. at LifeTime Westchester.
