Lions Defeat Florida International 4-2

Columbia improves to 4-1 on year; Anna Zhang, Clarine Lerby and Julia Haynes win singles matches, Akanksha Bhan/Zhang and Melissa Sakar/Rachele Rimondini win doubles matches.
HARRISON, N.Y.—Columbia claimed the doubles point then won three singles matches to take a 4-2 women's tennis decision over Florida International Saturday at LifeTime Westchester. With the victory, Columbia wins its second straight match and improves to 4-1 on the year. FIU drops to 2-2.
Columbia took a 1-0 advantage as it claimed the doubles point. Akanksha Bhan and Anna Zhang broke a 1-1 tie with a decisive 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles over FIU's Andjela Skrobonja and Yasmine Kabbaj. The two teams split the first matches as Columbia's Rachele Rimondini and Melissa Sakar defeated FIU's Kristina Miletic and Andreea Velcea 6-3 at No. 2, and FIU's duo of Kamila Umarova and Ines Bekrar won a 6-3 decision over Columbia's Clarine Lerby and Sophia Strugnell.
Lerby started the Lions off strong in singles as she registered a quick 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over FIU's Ines Bekrar. The victory gave Columbia a sizeable 2-0 advantage.
FIU tied the match at 2-2 when Kamila Umarova won a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Columbia's Akanksha Bhan at No. 1 singles and Kristina Miletic claimed a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Columbia's Michelle Xu at No. 6.
Columbia's Anna Zhang gave the Lions the lead at 3-2 with a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over FIU's Yasmine Kabbaj. Columbia's Julia Haynes followed with a 6-2, 4-6, 3-1 retired victory over FIU's Andreea Velcea at No. 4 singles. That gave the Lions a 4-2 win.
FIU was playing its second of two matches this weekend in the New York City area. The visiting Panthers defeated LIU on Friday.
Next up for Columbia, the Lions travel to Ithaca, N.Y. for the 2022 ECAC Tournament next weekend, Feb. 11-13.
