Maya Walker added fifth goal of the season
NEW YORK – Katie Wimmer of Columbia field hockey (3-7,0-2) added eight more saves to her Ivy League-leading save total, giving her 68 for the season, as the Lions went up against Delaware (3-8,1-1) on Sunday afternoon. Columbia fell to the Blue Hens by a score of 3-1.
The Blue Hens ripped off two shots before finding the back of the five minutes into the contest. Columbia limited the attacking opportunities for Delaware in the second quarter, blocking three shots and holding the Blue Hens scoreless. The Lions went into the break down by one.
The Delaware insurance goal was added near the halfway mark of the third quarter. The Lions offensive intensity increased in the final quarter. Columbia had five shots in the first five minutes before finally beating the Blue Hens keeper. Maya Walker netted her fifth goal of the season, tied for fifth most in the Ivy League. The junior capitalized on a corner entry, getting assists from Sophie Rockefeller and Meg Bowen.
Delaware added the dagger five minutes later, creating a two-point hole. The Blue Hens held their lead until the final whistle.
The Lions played today's contest in memory of Rick Holzinger, father of current Lion Lucy Holzinger, who passed away from brain cancer in the fall of 2020.
