Women's Tennis Defeats Yale 4-2 in ECAC First Round

Lions advance to second round matchup against Princeton on Saturday at 2 p.m.; Akanksha Bhan, Anna Zhang, Shivani Amineni, and Julia Haynes all win singles matches for Columbia.
ITHACA, N.Y.— The Columbia women's tennis team won its third consecutive match and advanced to the second round of the 2022 ECAC Women's Indoor Tennis Championship with a 4-2 win over Yale Friday at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center.
With the victory, Columbia advances to play No. 1 seed Princeton on Saturday at 2 p.m. The winner advances to the ECAC Championship match.
Yale jumped out to a 1-0 lead as the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point. Chelsea Kung and Jessie Gong won a 6-4 decision at No. 1 over Columbia's Akanksha Bhan and Anna Zhang, while Caroline Dunleavy and Kathy Wang won a hard-fought 7-6 (5) decision over Columbia's Rachele Rimondini and Melissa Sakar at No. 2 doubles. The Lions' No. 3 duo of Sophia Strugnell and Clarine Lerby claimed a 6-3 decision over Yale's Vivian Cheng and Jamie Kim.
But Columbia (5-1) overcame the deficit by claiming four of the five singles matches. The Lions won singles matches at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to advance. Bhan won a 6-2, 6-3 match over Chelsea Kung at No. 1, Zhang defeated Gong at No. 3, Shivani Amineni defeated Cheng 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 5, and Julia Haynes knocked off Kathy Wang 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Columbia's Lerby dropped a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 decision at No. 4 singles to Yale's Rhea Shrivastava.

Columbia is attempting to win its third straight ECAC Tournament championship after winning the title in 2019 and 2020. Head Coach Ilene Weintraub and the Lions have won four ECAC titles in program history: as hosts in 2014, 2016, 2019, and as hosts again in 2020. In 2020, Columbia claimed the title with consecutive victories over Brown (4-0), Harvard (4-1), and Yale (4-3) in the championship match.
